As human-caused climate change drives temperatures higher over the course of the century, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicts droughts will likely become longer and more severe. If they are successful and CAM plants are productive enough, the research could potentially have a significant impact on global food security. Tougher plants for a tough global food problem “Right now, we are working on how those genes come together, and then we test their efficiency.” “We have a very good idea of what genes are important for CAM species,” Yang said. Since the genomes of a number of different CAM plants have been sequenced in the past two years, researchers are beginning to develop a better understanding of how the pathway works. The challenge for researchers like Yang is to find a way to get other plants to create this nocturnal carbon storage. At this point, the plant is able to perform photosynthesis like a C3 plant, except the stomata don’t have to stay open because the carbon is already available in the leaf. When the sun rises, the plants break down the organic acids, releasing the CO2. They do this by temporarily fixing carbon in a transient pool of mostly malic acid. However, CAM plants also need a way of storing carbon overnight, because just like other plants, they cannot use it to build energy reserves like sugars and starches without sunlight. In fact, CAM plants require between a fifth and a third of the water that C3 and C4 plants need, respectively. This timing shift means less water evaporates off of the leaves through transpiration. What makes photosynthesis in agave and cactus so different? Unlike most plants that take up carbon dioxide through stomata in their leaves during the day (known as C3 and C4 plants), CAM plants absorb most of their CO2 at night. He said interest in CAM has increased rapidly in the last few years alone, as concern about the effects of climate change on drought has gone up and more funding from the federal government has come in. Xiaohan Yang, a staff scientist in the Biosciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, is one of the researchers working to figure out how to get CAM to work in other types of plants. Altogether, that could involve somewhere around 100 genes, the researchers said, though they don’t know the exact number yet. Once scientists figure out all the genes associated with its basic function, as well as its regulation, they then have to find a way to add that genetic material into the target plant, or make existing genes and proteins within the plant work the way they want them to. Re-creating an entire metabolic pathway in a plant is far from a simple task. However, it has only been in the last couple of years that a growing number of researchers have been attempting to fully identify and transfer this photosynthetic pathway to other plant species. The process is called crassulacean acid metabolism, or CAM, and a small group of scientists have been studying it for several decades because the plants that have it use less water. The hardy succulent, along with species like prickly pear (an edible cactus), pineapple and vanilla orchids, has evolved over millions of years to perform a different kind of photosynthesis that allows the plants to survive in semiarid environments where water isn’t always readily available. Agave may be most associated with tequila, but this plant has a less familiar use-it’s teaching scientists about how to craft more drought-resistant plants.

There’s room for a lot of exploration for adolescents, maybe more than any other age group. but there are some kids who actually would like to be doing songwriting and mariachi and music appreciation at the highest levels. “Of course, there’re some kids who love orchestra, band, and choir and that’s great. “That’s where I think many music programs sometimes need to catch up,” Ilari said. Students also reported a wide range of musical tastes, from K-pop and rap to heavy metal and Western classical music. and how they also build communities around themselves.” It’s how they express themselves, it’s how they vent their emotions. “For pre-teens and teenagers, music becomes this very important badge of identity. “Music is not a magic bullet, but I think offering access is important because it has a lot of potential for engagement. Students reported on their feelings of competence, confidence, and connection to school-indicators of well-being and “positive youth development.” Rather, more than three quarters of students were studying some kind of instrument, either through formal music classes, from marching band and orchestra to mariachi casual listening and/or the hybrid virtual music program. Only about 3 percent of students had no music education at all. Many in-person school music programs have been considered high-risk activities in recent years, because group singing or using brass or woodwind instruments indoors can produce a high concentration of droplets and aerosols in the air, which some early studies found contributed to COVID-19 outbreaks. The results come as many school districts debate how and whether to rebuild music programs that stalled during the pandemic. “There’s the hope those good feelings will transfer to other areas,” though the study did not look at connections between students’ music engagement and achievement in other academic subjects. “Sometimes, for the kid who’s not doing well in other things, music may be the place where that kid might thrive and feel, ‘oh, I can do this,’” she said. “In part, music may provide both an outlet for emotions and a different path to self-confidence for students working to recoup learning disrupted during the pandemic,” said Beatriz Ilari, associate professor of music teaching and learning at the University of Southern California, and lead author of the study. Math and science games for grades K-8 that increase engagement and test scores. While students who participated only in virtual music showed smaller benefits, researchers foundthat higher engagement across multiple programs-in both formal or extracurricular music instruction-was associated with greater feelings of competence and connection to school among middle schoolers. She earned anywhere from $65,000 to $85,000 a year, and managed to save roughly $2,500 a month.įor instance, she'd challenge herself to spend $200 a month on groceries. On top of coming from a place of privilege, Merz deliberately kept her expenses very low. Managing her money well and not overspending ensured that she kept plenty of that cash in the bank. Upon graduating, Merz also had a paid college internship that turned into a full-time offer in IT that paid extremely well. For instance, Merz used money from her sign-on bonus to buy her car outright. In fact, she was able to graduate with a positive net worth from scholarships and money she earned serving in the Air National Guard. Further, she didn't have any family to support, nor any dependents who relied on her financially. Merz was fortunate to earn a full-ride scholarship to a local state school, and avoided student loans entirely. She made the most of her fortunate financial situation Here's what Merz did to have a net worth of $300,000 by 30. "It turns out the shift from college to working wasn't the greatest and I was willing to do pretty much anything that would allow me to return to the freewheeling lifestyle I had in college," says Merz. When Merz landed a full-time job after college, she immediately started putting those lessons to good use. "I mostly hovered around a 65% savings rate, which helped me calculate my time left in 10 years, at the age of 35." Comes with two grease pencils for easy writing and erasing. The Illumiscore is a stylish product and functions very well. We also suggest picking up neon liquid chalk as a fun alternative writing tool if you want a little more "pop" on the scoreboard. This scoreboard is also a bit smaller for keeping track of other games, but you'll have no problem when scoring cricket. You won't get automated game modes like you would with a digital scorer, but this is still a stylish choice to have alongside your dart board, and at a much lower cost. Another easy fix is putting a black piece of cardstock behind the board - a cheap way to fix any visibility issues on white surfaces. We recommend placing against dark contrasting colors for the best results. This scorer is completely clear, and if you mount it directly onto a white wall, you might have some trouble reading it. When you are ready to play, the board can be mounted directly to the wall. You can buy with confidence here, as this company has a long history of designing dart equipment. The Viper line has produced a great number of quality dart related products, and this Illumiscore makes another great addition. This scorer can be used with 4 AA batteries or an AC power supply. When you need to reset the scored, you can just wipe away with any dry cloth. All you need is the two "grease" pencils, made of wax, to start keeping track of points. It comes with a light-up scoreboard that doesn't require any chalk or dry erase markers. The Illumiscore comes with a modern twist, however. This next pick begins our choices for the more classic takes on dart scorers. Custom handicap option to give weak players head start.Support 40 games and up to 8 players at a time. If you want a few more game modes, the same cool features, and a lower price tag, then this will be your best bet for a dart game scorer. This is still a great scorer overall and achieves a lot of the function of our first choice, but at around half the cost. The LED display also feels a bit old fashion. The keypad on the scorer works well, but is not as stylish or fun as our number one pick. You'll need a drill bit to complete the process, however. Special screws are included if you want to mount this directly to a dartboard cabinet. The installation process can be done in just 4 steps. That feature alone is sure to save you a few trips to the store for batteries. You'll need 3 AA batteries to operate this scorer, which are not included.Ī nice feature is the auto-off mode, in case you walk away without turning it off. The included mounting system lets you put it on the wall any way needed, and won't take up too much room. The whole system is fairly small at 5 L x 1.5 W x 10.25 H inches. Other options like handicaps and solo play are available as well. This scorer actually manages to pack in even more games with a total of 40, and more than 600 options to select. The next best digital scorer you can find is the Viper ProScore. Voice commands, rankings, and handicapping option. Can be battery-powered or use main supply.Supports 24 game types including all 01 games, Count up, high-five, etc.We recommend this for anyone who likes to play darts frequently. It's really convenient to have for active dart players, and a host of game modes brings a ton of value to the system. In summary, this a great scorer that looks cool and gets the job done. We also found that the computer player in solo is a little too good, even on the lower difficulties. If you are careless, you can lose out on a lot of games this way. For the most, it is very intuitive, but if you do make a mistake, there is no way to go back. The instructions act as a good reference, but it still takes some time to get used to using the scorer. Setup is easy, and the scorer can be mounted nearby to your dartboard for quick access. The scorer has the option to run on batteries or the included AC adapter, whichever is more convenient for you. There is even an option for solo play to keep on top of your daily practice. You can add handicaps for players, giving pros and newbies a chance to compete together. A handy voice prompt lets you know when the next player is up. You'll have access to 24 games with 132 options to choose from. The board can be used with up to 8 players at once, and comes a host of features. It matches exactly up with a traditional pro bristle board layout. When you need to add points, you just press the corresponding spot on the dartboard display. Player scores and all buttons are labeled clearly. This scorer comes with a stylish, clean, and intuitive interface. Our number one pick is Arachnid's digital scorer. note: as many of you already know, Gradius 3 was released for the PlayStation 2 in late 2000 along with Gradius 4 on the compilation disc Gradius III & IV, which was in essence the Gradius Deluxe Pack 2. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, offices in the private and government sectors are reducing office printing outputs, with great potential for further reductions as electronic devices become more readily available at accessible prices. Further GIT efforts are also underway in other Asian regions, including Thailand. For example, the Chinese government has issued policies to reduce the energy consumption of the pulp and paper industries. The concept of GIT is increasingly influencing people’s behaviour and government’s policies. For instance, the printing industry in China consumed 1.6 billion tons of paper in 2014, and it is growing at a rate of 4.68% per year. Likewise, pulp and paper production is the 3rd largest industrial polluter. The emission of greenhouse gas during printing pollutes our environment. This is fully aligned with the concept of “Green Information Technology” or GIT, which aims to reduce the use of environmentally harmful materials and to promote the use of recyclable products. Accordingly, many organisations are exploring alternatives to reduce their use of natural resources and operational costs, as well as methods/techniques that reduce the use of materials with considerable environmental impact. In the graphical communication industry, the Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) partnership promotes “sustainable printing”, whereas the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) recommends designing products that use less material and energy with recyclability and reusability for a longer life span. Sustainability can be defined as the balance between the use of natural resources, social engagement and economic capital for the existence of the present and future generations. The removal of black pixels can lead to more sustainable printing, and this simple solution can be extended to other non-Latin languages as part of the global Green Information Technology efforts in South-East Asia. Awareness of the benefits of using Ecofonts changes the users’ attitudes towards the printing quality of Ecofont. Visual tests showed that the visual experience of text printed using this Thai Ecofont is satisfactory. The study also proposes a new Ecofont typeface for the Thai language. Results from instrumental measurements and digital image analyses show that the use of Ecofonts reduces toner use of an inkjet printer by up to 28%. Visibility and legibility tests, as well as mass analyses tests, were then performed on texts printed with some such typefaces. To achieve this, black pixels were removed from 10 English and 13 Thai typefaces widely used in academia and other media. This study (a) assesses toner use reductions in documents printed with English and Thai Ecofonts, and (b) studies the observers’ perception of texts printed either with Ecofonts or with original typefaces. Moreover, texts printed with Ecofonts can be perceived as being less legible than those printed with the original typefaces. However, most of the research on the use of Ecofonts focuses on Latin alphabets. The use of Ecofonts in printing can result in economic savings and lower environmental impact. |
